What You Need To Hire A Trailer
It is essential that you bring all the necessary documentation with you otherwise your hire will be delayed or possibly cancelled.
Full legal terms and conditions are listed and available to print. Click on terms and conditions at the bottom of any page.
Drivers Licence
NB. Indespension is referring to your drivers licence for identification purposes only. It is the Hirers responsibility to ensure they comply as follows:
Trailers below 750kg gross (This usually means an unbraked trailer, but the trailer is still limited to half the kerbweight of the towing vehicle when loaded) can be towed legally on a B licence only.
Indespension Trailers NOT requiring an E category on the drivers licence:
- Light Goods Trailers
- DTU1, DTU2, DTU4
- Goods Trailers
- GTU1, GTU1 Extended
- Van Trailers
- VTU1
For all other trailers, drivers need a B + E category on their driving licence. Note: For Southern Ireland a full Irish driving licence is required, but it must be used in conjunction with a local address. Photographic identity must be provided, either a photograph driving licence or passport.
Vehicle and Trailer
- The towing vehicle should be fitted with a 50mm tow ball and 7 pin socket*.
- A number plate matching that of the towing vehicle must be fitted to the trailer (most Indespension outlets do sell number plates, but additional forms of identification are required).
- Ratchet straps or a similar method of restraining a load on car transporters, motor cycle trailers and/or open trailers must be used (available for purchase).
- We suggest a tarpaulin to retain loose loads on open trailers (available to purchase).
* On certain vehicles with factory fitted 13 pin sockets, a converter may be necessary.

The following items are for the purpose of identification of the hirer. Presentation is not intended to confirm the legality of the hirer with regard to towing a trailer nor is it a requirement that the hirer actually tow the trailer hired. However, if a driver other than the hirer tows the trailer, they must have a driving licence with category B + E.
